First invented and perfected in Germany and France by engineers such as Karl Benz, the automobile quickly overtook the streets and highways of the United States during the 1920s. Its popularity was due in large part to mass-production techniques innovated by American businessman Henry Ford, who reduced the price of the Model T to a level that middle class families could afford it.
