A team sport is any sport that requires multiple players working together to achieve a shared objective such as scoring points against opposing teams. These sports require team members to communicate and work in a cooperative and supportive environment to complete tasks that are inherently impossible or impractical for a single player to accomplish. Some examples of team sports are football, soccer, basketball, hockey and baseball.

In addition to learning how to communicate with teammates, team sports teach children the value of hard work and effort. In order to succeed in a team sport, children must train hard throughout the year and make personal sacrifices. Additionally, team sports provide a platform for children to learn how to deal with losing. Every athlete experiences a loss at some point during their career, and learning to accept that and use it as a way to improve is an invaluable life lesson.

Team sports also teach kids to be respectful and fair to their opponents, a skill that can translate into many areas of their lives. This includes school, work and social situations. In addition, learning to respect and appreciate your teammates’ skills is an important part of being a good teammate.

In track and field, a team can include up to 12 athletes. This provides a unique opportunity for athletes who may not have the speed to be a champion in the open 400 or the distances of the 4×400 relay to still make a contribution to their team’s success by running a key leg of a race. For these non-elite athletes, it is often the highlight of their track careers.
